ANALYSIS OF PARTICIPANT DATA
Group 12a, 12b, 12c, is willing to sponsor DNA analysis for one male Hill with a reasonably well documented lineage to any of the following Virginia Hill lineages: (1) Isaac Hill/Margaret Jennings or their son William Hill (2) Thomas Hill/Elizabeth of Amherst County or their son Dabney Hill (3) John D. Hill of Amherst County, Va. (4) Humphrey Hill of Caroline, Va. (5) William C. Hill of Augusta County, Va. Contact: Marine263@ma.rr.com.
There are DNA branches for Group 12a, 12b, 12c, for descendants from an unknown but mutual recent common ancestor (MRCA). There are at least 2 and possibly 3 lines to this MRCA suggested by paper documentation. Group 12a lineages are proven to William Hill (1700 VA – 1787 NC) who married Susannah Smither. Group 12b leads to to John Hill (bef 1710 – c1780) of Amelia County who was the brother of the William Hill in Group 12a. Finally, the Group 12c lineages are proven to William Hill (c1742 – c1787) of Amherst. There is documentation suggesting that the William Hill of Group 12c is a grandson of John Hill of Amelia County. However, this linkage has not yet been proven.
Group 12b: John Hill (bef. 1710? – c1780) of Amelia County, brother of
William Hill (c1700 VA-c1786 NC) m/Susannah Smither
John Hill of Amelia County was the brother of William Hill who married Susannah Smither. He married Elizabeth (possibly Wingo). His children were William Hill, Sr, John Hill, Isaac Hill (VA – bef 1785), Moses Hill, Joel Hill (c1734 VA – 1834 KY) and daughter Priscilla Hill who married John Bell. Joel Hill migrated “far away” from Amelia Co. VA. William Hill, Sr preceded his father in death. His son, William Hill, Jr is thought to be the father of Abner Hill (c1768 VA – aft. 1850 KY). Abner migrated to Kentucky with one of his uncles, either Joel or John Hill. John Hill, Jr. first moved to Madison Co., Ky, buying land from Samuel Davis in 1787 and then moved to Clark County where he died in 1808. There is mounting evidence that William Hill, Jr (grandson of John Hill of Amelia County) is also the William Hill identified in Group 12c. DNA evidence strongly suggests this possibility and researchers in both groups are actively studing it.
1 – William Hill
(?) William Hill, Jr.
Abner Hill (Kit 6342)
2 – John Hill (Kit 42121)
3 – Isaac Hill (Kit 96170)
4 – Moses Hill
5 – Joel Hill
KIT 6342: John Hill (bef 1710 – c1780) of Amelia County (brother of William Hill/Smither). Abner Hill is thought to have migrated to KY with one of his uncles, Joel or John Hill.
Direct paternal lineage of DNA participant 6342:
(?) William Hill (VA – bef 1777 VA)
(?) William Hill, Jr (died c1785)
Abner HILL (1768 VA – aft. 1850 KY) m/Elizabeth Fullilove
William HILL (1810 KY – 1865 KY)
John W. HILL Sr (1831 KY – 1909 IL)
John W. HILL Jr (1856 KY – 1929 AR)

KIT 42121: John Hill (bef 1710 – c1780) of Amelia County (brother of William Hill/Smither). This lineage is documented to John Hill b/c 1745 VA. d/1808 in Clark Co. KY., m/Lucy Luck and named a son Garland Hill. There is some evidence suggesting that this John Hill was the son of John Hill of Amelia County who also named a son Garland Hill.
Direct paternal lineage of DNA participant 42121:
John Hill (c 1745 VA – 1808 KY) m/Lucy Luck
Garland Hill (1771 VA – 1852 Ill) m/Phoebe Samuel
James Hill (1800 KY – 1838 KY) m/Nancy Quisenberry
Thomas Garland Hill (1826 KY – 1894 KY) m/Mary Miller
Claude Clifton Hill (1874 KY – 1936 KY) m/Fanny Winston Diuguid
Thomas Garland Hill (1921 – Living)
KIT 96170: John Hill (bef 1710 – c1780) of Amelia County (brother of William Hill/Smither). This lineage is documented to Isaac Hill (c1780 VA – c 1846 KY). There is some evidence suggesting that this Isaac Hill is Isaac Hill, Jr and a grandson of John Hill of Amelia County. Other evidence suggests that Isaac’s father may be Gilead Hill or a variant of that name with an estimated birth date of 1750.
Direct paternal lineage of DNA participant 96170:
(?) Gilead Hill (Va: ca 1750 – )
Issac Hill (c1780 VA – 1846 KY)
Elijah Hill (1813 KY – 1881 IL)
Cornelius Hill (1849 IL – 1919 IL)
Lafayette Hill (1871 IL – 1950 IL)
Tornie Otis Hill (1900 IL – 1971 IL)
Living Hill (1936 ILL – )

Comment: For more than 80 years genealogists have wondered if James Hill of Amherst Co. VA. who m/Anne Overton might be related to William Hill of Amherst. DNA does not support this conjecture (see Group 28, Kit: #146171). An additional DNA sample from another line to James Hill is needed for verification.
