Important changes

(UPDATED) We have been notified by the Group Project Management Office of FTDNA, that we can no longer post participant kit numbers, or the associated lineage and the contact information of participants on this website. The reason for this is the new General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) laws that take effect May 25, 2018. This is a fairly new law that is affecting many genealogy websites and DNA services. As many of you know, the posting of detailed and helpful data here has been a wonderful tool for our Group members and the hallmark of this website since 2002, but unfortunately there is no workable solution to keeping this website functioning exactly as it has been. Access to our Group pages on this website is closed.

For your grouped matches and for contacting other participants, please utilize the resources available to you through your FTDNA account. The FTDNA will be improving the group pages for all FTDNA DNA Group Projects, and I will remain as the HILL Project Administrator. Please enjoy the features of the HILL DNA PROJECT there, and contact me if you need any assistance. Thank you! -Byron Hill, HILL DNA PROJECT

Welcome to the HILL DNA PROJECT

Welcome to the HILL DNA PROJECT, a scientific approach to finding our ancestors including Hill, Hills, and other variants of the name. Since 2002, our project has been one of the largest DNA surname support groups affiliated with Family Tree DNA. We have more than nine hundred participants and have identified seventy distinct Hill lines. This website is purely an independent volunteer effort to assist participants who have joined the Hill DNA Group Project at Family Tree DNA.

Here is how it works. Simply go to Family Tree DNA (www.familytreedna.com) and order your test kit. We suggest ordering at least the 37 marker Y-DNA test. Most of our participants have been tested at the 67 marker level. Family Tree DNA will send you your test kit. Follow the instructions and send your kit in. You will be given an account page at Family Tree DNA (make sure you join the Hill DNA GROUP through your account page). After about five weeks, your results will be reported to you, and if you have joined the Hill DNA group, your results will simultaneously be reported to us here at the HILL DNA PROJECT. We will group you at the FTDNA with your matched HILL group at the Family Tree DNA website.

Match Preferences – Are yours generating too many email notifications?

Many participants have their match preferences in their FTDNA account settings at a low resolution setting that is matching participants that are so distantly related that we cannot even Group the matches. This is generating massive numbers of email notifications, often wasting everyone’s time. Please review your match settings at your FTDNA account and adjust to a higher resolution for notifications. We do not Group any results for testing levels under 37 Markers.

Also, there are many participants who have “joined” the HILL DNA PROJECT only for the purpose of finding collateral relations with no Y-DNA connection to any HILL participants. Many of these participants have their match notifications set very low as well, also generating massive numbers of email notifications. For participants only searching for collateral relation research, you will find better HILL lineage information on this (www.hilldna.com) website by using the SEARCH feature.

For either of the above situations, again… if you are receiving too many match email notifications from the FTDNA, please log on to your FTDNA account page and adjust your preferences to a higher resolution.

Thank you!

Please UPDATE your FTDNA account

If you have not logged on your FTDNA (Family Tree DNA) account in a while, please do so and make sure your contact information (ESPECIALLY YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS) is up-to-date. If your email address is no longer valid, matching participants will not be able to reach you. If you have lost your password or log-in information for your FTDNA account, send an email with your KIT Number to helpdesk@familytreedna.com and ask for your log-in info.
